"The idea behind this image was to create an army of women borrowing from the African proverb that it takes a village to raise a child. The women are mirroring each other with the placement of symbols of culture at the forefront standing together in solidarity. The image also stands to evoke the cultural tradition of family gatherings where family stories are often exchanged and heralded by our grandparents. Often imparting wisdom and contributing to our identity formation. challenging the idea of the exotica that existed in the 19th century. It now becomes a crocheting of images where the oppositional gaze begins to surface aiming to provide a broader experience on the black lives transcontinentally."
