Rebirth of Venus, 2009

While much of David LaChapelle's photography is undeniably contemporary and rooted in pop culture, his figurative work draws from the visual language and ideas of both the Renaissance and Romantic periods. His meticulous attention to composition, use of symbolism, and exploration of human emotion reflect these movements which bookend the Baroque movement, an era that is often associated with darker and more melancholic themes.
