In the series Land SCAPE, the battle between nature and civilization unfolds as LaChapelle’s towering oil refineries glow, becoming heroic symbols of the industrial revolution. From afar these energy plants are enticing and child-like but at closer look, the scaled models are made with objects that have become ubiquitous in daily life including bottles, straws, cans, and other single-use by-products of industry.
“The industrial revolution changed our relationship with nature. Decisions were made long before we were born that changed the course of history. What is convenient now is ultimately a burden to nature in the long run.” - David LaChapelle
