You can’t plan moments like this. They chase you down the street and demand to be seen.

I was traveling with my family deep in Yunnan Province, exploring the foothills where Tibetan minorities live. Moun-

tain light carved shadows into every fold of the land, and daily life unfolded like poetry in motion. I wasn’t hunting for

images that day, just walking and observing, letting my children’s curiosity lead the way.

And then, there she was.

An old woman in a brilliant red dress, walking down the sidewalk like the grand marshal of her own private parade.

I was having lunch with the kids, playing with a second-hand camera I’d bought at a street market. She wore a crim-

son hat tilted just so, and perched delicately on top, lying on its back with wings outstretched for balance, was her

pet goose.

Yes. A goose. Riding on her head.

Everyone around her carried on as if this were perfectly normal. To her, I suppose it was. She moved with such poise,

as though balancing a goose on your head was simply what one does when stepping out for an afternoon stroll.

I lifted the camera instinctively, suddenly remembering I barely knew how to operate it. Without hesitation, I ad-

vanced the film, metered the light from her cheek, and released the shutter. The background fell away into shadow,

several stops underexposed, turning everything behind her into darkness. I managed one more frame before she

disappeared into the busy street.

From that darkness, she emerged: a burst of color, culture, and humor. What I cherish most isn’t the visual surprise. It’s

the dignity she carries. It reminds me that joy, eccentricity, and tradition aren’t enemies. In a world heavy with hardship,

there’s still room for lightness without ever surrendering identity or pride.

This image reminds us that beauty exists in the unexpected. And sometimes, hope looks like a woman in a red hat with

a goose on her head.
