David LaChapelle, Fly on my Sweet Angel Fly on to the Sky, 1988

David LaChapelle

Fly on my Sweet Angel Fly on to the Sky, 1988
Pigment print
38.5x60 inches
David LaChapelle has been quoted as saying one of the best representations of the angelic form today is still the winged figure. Fly on My Sweet Angel Fly on to the Sky is one of David’s earliest works.

For the photograph he saved two thousand dollars to have special wings created. He wanted the wings to have muscularity and appear as if they could lift the figure off the ground and really take flight. He also wanted rigging to be hidden so he designed a system where a belt (hidden under the models wardrobe) could support the wings. (As an anecdote, the maker of these wings went on to design wings for the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows.)

This image relates to the other works by David from the same period, representing spiritual themes such as Angels, Saints and Martyrs.
